Pilates is a movement method rather than an exercise routine. By teaching you the principles underlying good movement, it gives you a skill for life that can be applied to all other activities, from sitting at the PC to hitting a forehand on the tennis court.
Pilates is based on the development of core control to allow correct movement of the limbs and spine from a strong centre. It demands concentration and thought, which incidentally makes it a very relaxing form of exercise - no chance of letting your mind wander to stressful subjects!
Classes are held in the Village Club on Thursday mornings from 9:45-11.00 a.m. and on Thursday evenings at 8:00 p.m. The class is of mixed ability, with new members learning simplified versions of more advanced exercises. (Beginners will require an induction session before joining.) Each student progresses at his/her own pace, with close supervision to ensure safety and accuracy.
The class is limited to 12 members and runs on a block-booking basis, a block of 5 weeks costing £46. Blocks run consecutively, with breaks at Christmas, Easter and summer. The drop-in format favoured by some exercise classes does not make sense with a method like Pilates, which has to be learned step-by-step and requires regular practice to gain the full benefits.
All equipment is provided, with the exception of exercise mats. (A camping roll mat is perfect!)
